The Vocabulary
Workshop series is used with all of the grades. The words in this
book are difficult and require practice. A student who does homework, both written
and study, will do better on the vocabulary and spelling tests. The VW studies take
place in the library.
In the English classroom, Tuesdays are our "Word Days" when we
will have lessons on vocabulary usage and spelling rules. Separate notes and homework
assignments go along with these lessons. In addition, the students will be doing
station activities as reinforcement for vocabulary and spelling skills.

Be on the
lookout for all things English!
The blue binder will
house all of the student's reading and English notes, forms, and resources. It will
also hold good examples of published authors' work to use as models. Each student
has been given a reading log as well as a writing log to fill out every night as part of
homework responsibility. The binder is to be brought to class every day. An
"Expectations for Writing" sheet in the binder explains all of Mrs. Habicht's
class requirements. It should be reviewed occasionally.
The binder (also used for reading ) is divided into sections:
Reading Notes, Grammar Notes, Writing Notes, Poetry, and Homework.
The students also have a writing
folder to house in-progress writing, current resources, and drafting paper.
Fianlly, there is a yellow folder in which
all spelling work: notes, homework, lists, PSL, etc. are kept.
Mrs. Habicht says:
"Organization is the key to success."
Just an idea: Because
students are often asked to print out repaired copies of typed pieces for display or
contest entries, it would be a good idea for them to save the writing pieces on a flash
drive that is dedicated to just writing for English. A whole year's worth should
fit. Also, saving work in this way would allow the student to transfer the work
area from home to school and back again.

The only notebook for English is a journal for
written observations of the student's world -- a nature journal. The student's have
been given the criteria. Every Thursday there will be an in-class reflection on the
observation.
